Rugs are such an important element in a furnished space. They inject character, interest and color to a room. We often say that a rug is the largest piece of art in a space! When pulling a room together we generally start with the rug and build-up from there.
Choosing a rug size can be tricky. We often go into spaces where the rug is too small which can throw off the entire scale of the room. Below we are going to walk you through how to choose the correct rug size.
1. Living Room:
Make sure all your large furniture pieces have at least their front legs anchored on the rug by at least 6in
If you are in between sizes, go up! A larger rug will stretch the eye and make the room appear larger
Try to leave 6in-8in of rug on each side of your furniture pieces

2. Bedrooms:
Ideally your rug should have at least 24in of exposure on all 3 sides of your bed.
These are the following rug sizes we recommend for each size of bed:
Twin bed: 5’x8’
Full bed: 6’x9’
Queen bed: 8’x10’
King bed: 9’x12’

3. Dining Room:
All your dining chairs should be sitting on the rug (even the chairs at the heads of the table)
The rug should extend the table by at least 12in on all sides

Next time you are choosing a rug for your space, remember form and function. Choose a material and color pallet that you love, but don’t forget to also think about scale. Make sure you are choosing a rug in an appropriate size for the space you are designing.
